Woman kidnapped by ex-husband who wanted to reunite with her rescued in Meru
A 39-year-old woman who was kidnapped by her ex-husband and held captive for three days in an abandoned house in Meru was rescued on Sunday by detectives from Nairobi and Meru.
The woman, Shankara Adan Hassan, worked at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as a tea and snacks vendor. She was abducted on October 12 by three men who posed as police officers and stopped the taxi she was in on Likoni Road in Nairobi.
One of the kidnappers was identified as Abdullahi Mohamed Guled, her former husband, who had divorced her and wanted to get back together with her. He told her that he loved her and that he was taking her to Kachiongo, Maua, in Meru, where they would live as a couple again.
The detectives traced the suspect to Maua Town, where he confessed to the kidnapping and led them to the house where he had kept the victim. The victim was found alive but dehydrated, as she had only been given water during her captivity.
The detectives also impounded a salon car that was used in the kidnapping and launched a manhunt for the other two suspects who escaped.
The victim was taken to a hospital for medical attention, while the suspect and the car were taken to DCI Makadara Nairobi for further investigation.
The victim’s family had reported the kidnapping to the police after the taxi driver who had driven her from Eastleigh to JKIA informed them of the incident. He said that he had been overtaken by a salon car that flashed its lights and ordered him to stop at Likoni Bridge. Two men who claimed to be police officers then got out of the car and forced the victim to get into their car, saying that she was wanted for questioning at Shauri Moyo Police Station.
The taxi driver said that he did not know the registration number of the car, but it was later confirmed to be the same one that was recovered in Maua.
