Fake alcohol and tax stamps worth millions seized in Nairobi outskirts

A joint operation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) led to the recovery of fake alcohol and tax stamps worth millions of shillings in two areas near Nairobi.

The raid, which was carried out by detectives from the Economic Crimes Unit, targeted illegal manufacturers and distributors of counterfeit alcoholic drinks in Kahawa Sukari and Kamulu.

The officers confiscated 1,078 bottles of fake alcohol, one roll of fake KRA stamps, 630 litres of ethanol, 10,300 empty bottles and four sacks of assorted bottle caps.

According to the DCI, the ethanol and alcohol had a market value of over Sh500,000 while the fake tax stamps could have been used to evade taxes worth Sh4 million.

The suspects behind the illicit business are being sought by the police as investigations continue. A seizure notice was issued and the goods were impounded as evidence.
